Fillings
Shouldn’t the old mouth-full-of-metal days be behind us? We’re all living more healthy lives, yet almost all of us will get a cavity or two at some point. Shouldn’t we expect a better-looking dental repair? Once considered inferior to metal fillings, composite filings have been continually refined and improved upon and now surpass metal fillings in every category. Importantly, composite fillings are less invasive and enable the patients to retain more of their natural tooth material. The current generation is more tooth structure friendly and much better looking than the older silver amalgam-type fillings. Resin-based composites are also more stable in place. Metal expands and contracts with heat and cold and continual exposure to hot food and cold drinks can actually cause the metal filling to fracture the tooth. In some cases a simple cavity repair can ultimately lead to requiring crowns. In other cases, patients are tired of being able to see their dark metal fillings through the remaining enamel of their teeth. Composite fillings provide a much more natural looking and long-lasting solution.
